MLS Takeover Of Chivas USA–Yea: This gets a thousands yeas from us. We wrote about this late last week and we are still buzzing from the joy that the Chivas USA name will be no more after the season. We should state that we think the idea of appealing to the Latino market is a good one and will continue to be pressed, but the way things went down at Chivas it was a bad mark for the entire league. It will be interesting to see how the rebrand goes and who buys them but there is no doubt this is a great move.
Pre-season Tournaments–Yea: One of the great signs of MLS’s maturation is the growing emphasis around providing a fan experience during pre-season. Mainly that comes from small tournaments. The Carolina Challenge Cup has been around for a long time but newer tournaments like the Rose City Invitational, the Desert Diamond Cup, and the Disney Pro Soccer Challenge are exactly what teams need. We especially love the addition of non-MLS teams like Portmore United, Fluminense U-23, the Charleston Battery, and FC Tucson.
Jermaine Defoe Injured–Nay: This sucks for not only Toronto FC and its fans but also for all those wishing to see Defoe play early and often in MLS. There is still a remote chance he can make it back for TFC’s opener but it seems unlikely. It’s also an unfortunate way to go out from Tottenham.
Laba To Vancouver–Yea and Nay: This is a big get for the Whitecaps. Laba was quietly one of the best players in the league last year and has the makings of a real star. He’ll pair with Nigel Reo-Coker for one of the best tandems in the league. From a TFC perspective it’s hard to give up a player of quality like Laba so this is a nay for them.
International Call-ups–Meh: With MLS continuing to draw in players from all over North America the number of players called in to various national teams continues to increase. But with only a few of them potentially featuring in the World Cup it’s hard to get excited.
U.S.-Ukraine In Cyprus–Yea: This move needed to happen. It had become apparent that it was no longer safe to host the match in the Ukraine and so playing it in Cyprus makes sense. A lot of teams have moved fixtures to Cyprus recently so it will be interesting to get the USMNT’s take on it. Politically, it was the right thing to do. No matter what side of the issue people are on it makes sense to use soccer to make a stand and say things aren’t right.
Freddy Adu–Nay: It was no surprise that Freddy Adu isn’t going to be landing at Blackpool. He was always going to train there and nothing more. Still, it’s sad that he can’t find a permanent spot. He would be a good addition to MLS (he wasn’t awful with Philadelphia, just not …read more
